Winter Spiffy

Early this month, Spiffy Saturday came again, giving me another opportunity to create another look for the event. This time, I wanted to make sure that I fit the winter theme. I snagged a perfect winter fabric deal from Joann’s and started sketching.

I recently became infatuated with peasant tops and I sought to reproduce the neckline and sleeve shape of the peasant tops using left over elastic I had from a previous project. The design came out perfectly, despite the fact that I forgot to use interfacing to maintain the shape of the button holes down the back.

A few days before Spiffy Saturday, I found out it would be cold and rainy, so a quick purchase of a compact umbrella and fur stole from Amazon was in order.

The look was fantastic and there were several wonderful photos of everyone at the event. Since my first time at the event, there has been a spike in interest for the event, showing that vintage lovers exist, they just need an outlet.

I’m absolutely excited for the next Spiffy event, coming in May, and I plan on making another original design. My sewing techniques have improved so I’m looking forward to creating something even better next time!

S’mores Skirt

My friends decided to throw a campfire party since Central Florida was getting its first cold snap of the Fall. It was set to be in the low 40s over the weekend so I wanted to make a special plaid skirt for our s’mores party.

I used a pattern I had purchased years ago (Simplicity 3673) but never had the confidence to use. I only used the skirt portions of the pattern because I didn’t want a dress or jumper that would be limited to certain events.

The fabric I bought from Joann’s was a light flannel fabric that was perfect for a skirt. It was soft to the touch and had enough lightness to be somewhat flow-y, in case the night warmed up at all.

The skirt came out great, I had to add some darts into the waist in order to fit me perfectly, which is no problem with the pattern I used. I find it better to fit the waist with darting after sewing it altogether since my waist has a 9″ difference to my hips.

I find myself wearing this skirt more often now that just campfire s’mores. It’s remarkably comfy and very easy to pair with an oversized cardigan or sweater in the cold weather. Though Florida doesn’t really get cold, I find this skirt perfect for the below 80’s winter.
