Winter Spiffy

Early this month, Spiffy Saturday came again, giving me another opportunity to create another look for the event. This time, I wanted to make sure that I fit the winter theme. I snagged a perfect winter fabric deal from Joann’s and started sketching.

I recently became infatuated with peasant tops and I sought to reproduce the neckline and sleeve shape of the peasant tops using left over elastic I had from a previous project. The design came out perfectly, despite the fact that I forgot to use interfacing to maintain the shape of the button holes down the back.

A few days before Spiffy Saturday, I found out it would be cold and rainy, so a quick purchase of a compact umbrella and fur stole from Amazon was in order.

The look was fantastic and there were several wonderful photos of everyone at the event. Since my first time at the event, there has been a spike in interest for the event, showing that vintage lovers exist, they just need an outlet.

I’m absolutely excited for the next Spiffy event, coming in May, and I plan on making another original design. My sewing techniques have improved so I’m looking forward to creating something even better next time!

Bésame and Victorian Stripes

Yesterday, I was ecstatic to receive two items (technically three) that I had lusted over for months. Bésame Cosmetics lip colors I purchased from an Ipsy sale and Laura Byrnes Cigarette Pants in Victorian Stripes purchased from a Swap & Sell.

p1020231

I couldn’t have been happier with the fit of the pants. I was a little worried about the size. I grabbed these, size 2X, instead of the size I thought I would be, XL. Thankfully, they fit just perfect around my hips which are the hardest area for me to fit in pants.

p1020234

These trousers give me a wonderful shape and silhouette without feeling like a sausage. With some cigarette pants, I find myself having to hide my extra poof with a flowy top, but I could actually tuck in my shirt with these.

p1020237

The lip colors were just as satisfying. I received the Tango Red (Reproduction from 1939) and American Beauty (Reproduction from 1945) colors and they are perfectly vintage.

My favorite of the two is the American Beauty. I find that I prefer red lipcolors with bluer undertones and darker tints as opposed to orange undertones. The texture is quite nice on the lips and the color stayed on through eating and drinking.

The trousers originally retail for $92.00 but I got them on the Swap & Sell for almost half the price and in fantastic condition. The lip colors normally retail for $25.00 each and I received them both at a price of $19.00 from Ipsy. They are definitely worth the price but I’m so glad I was able to get them within my budget!

Black Friday Snags

In addition to my Catch of the Day purchases, I also ordered some tops and accessories from Doll Me Up on Black Friday. Normally, Doll Me Up’s prices are perfect for my budget anyway but on Black Friday, everything was 60%. I could not pass it up.

psx_20161203_003247

I ordered this beautiful pink top that, truly, goes with everything in my closet. The fit is perfect and I love the fabric. I purchased the mermaid brooch as well and love the glittery black against the pink.

psx_20161203_002910

My only issue was the sheerness, I tend to wear camisoles under my tops anyway but it still bothered me to have my skin show through.

psx_20161203_003418

I also purchased a white peasant top (my first!). I was concerned about the fit because they only had a 2X available at this price (I paid $4.99 for this) but it fit just right.

psx_20161203_004221

I paired it with my Sky Blue Jenny skirt from Pinup Girl Clothing and immediately felt like a Disney princess.

My husband was gone when I tried this on so I took full advantage of walking around and enjoying the feel of this outfit with no one to judge me!

psx_20161203_004416

The cat pin really gives me a laugh because you can see the star for his bottom. I absolutely love pins and this is a great addition to my collection.

By far, these were my favorite purchases and I now have a complete top collection to go with my skirts and trousers. It has only been a few months and already my wardrobe is completely changed!

Zulily Surprise Sale

I have a rule when I online shop: if I have to pay for shipping, I don’t buy it. This steadfast rule has kept me from spending all my money on one singular item. Websites like Pinup Girl Clothing typically offer free shipping, but only if you spend over $100. That’s why I was excited when Zulily had their PUG sale.

p1010890

All the pieces offered were at least 50% off, and though I had to pay for shipping, the price was still a steal compared to what I’d normally pay. I jumped at the Mary Blair Jenny Skirt in Pink Trains and ordered an XL right away.

psx_20161123_205606

Normally, I wear 2X in PUG, but the size chart had me convinced that an XL would fit. Unfortunately, it only fit if I was wearing my waist cincher corset underneath. The skirt is absolutely beautiful so I didn’t want to get rid of it.

p1010892

PUG Jenny skirts are now one of my favorites, I had purchased a light blue Jenny skirt on a Swap and Sell after my first purchase (Blue Ice Harlequin Circle Skirt reviewed here!) because I needed to have more.

psx_20161123_205826

The Jenny’s hit right at my mid-calf, which is where I love all my skirts to land. It allows me to wear petticoats without showing them underneath and lets me walk around without worrying if anyone can see my bottom.

psx_20161123_200528

Though the skirt is absolutely wonderful, I have to swap it for a larger size. I also purchased a pair of Steven Ella criss cross flats in Beige to pair with the skirt. They fit wonderfully and criss cross flats are now my favorite shoes.

p1010876

My experience with Zulily was just “ok”. The issue with the size chart really turned me off to using them again, also, the shipping took ages to reach me. The deal was pretty worth it though, so despite my reservations, I would probably shop there again.

p1010860

UPDATE 12/5/16: I swapped with a fellow PUG enthusiast for a 2X and it fits wonderfully!

Fashion at HHN

I started my vintage journey during the perfect season, Fall. Every year, my husband and I go to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando and this year, I got the chance to wear vintage all season. I started by making two skirts using Halloween fabrics I found at Joann Fabrics.

img_20160910_151822

I love the selection they carry and usually I have at least one coupon worth 40% off. I made a pleated 2″ waisted skirt and a gathered, elastic waistband skirt.

psx_20160911_110846psx_20160916_090931

The pleated skirt is my all time favorite. The combination of the fabric and the pleats just gives that vintage feel I wanted. I thought of doing it gathered but the price of the additional fabric would have put me out of budget. Instead, I used only 2 yards and still had at least a yard left for additional projects. The skirt even has POCKETS!!

I wore the gathered skirt more often just due to comfort. I love bats and the color allowed the print to glow in black lights which is a staple in many haunted house attractions. I loved it, however, in one of the scarezones (Vamp ’55) featuring 1950s vampires, the principal always seemed to take issue with my allegiance to the Bats.

psx_20160919_082337

The Vamp ’55 scarezone really was meant for me since I was just going into the vintage side of life. I even met a Spiffy Saturday friend there on multiple occasions wearing all the Pinup Girl Clothing pieces I could ever want.

20161015_152547

My husband and I attended the event so often, the scareactors began to learn our names, and, on more than one occasion, compliment my attire. It became my happy place, especially since derby was no longer doing that for me. I had lost some friends but HHN helped me through that.

img_20161031_231939

I even had the chance (pun intended) to re-wear my Chance skirt piece again. This time, I paired it with a Jaws t-shirt in honor of the fallen attraction. This HHN was probably my favorite HHN simply because I got to do it as myself and have the confidence to look the way I wanted to. And confidence can really get you anywhere.
