Galentine’s Day

I had the absolute pleasure of spending the pre-Valentine’s Day weekend with a group of lovely ladies in Tampa for a Galentine’s tea date at the Oxford Exchange. I don’t normally celebrate Valentine’s day but this gave me the perfect chance to wear my newest purchase from Sara USA.

This lovely dress was on Amazon for only $12 and my vintage love letter clutch (also from Amazon) was only $10. I wore a corset as part of my foundation to keep my waist cinched and I felt absolutely lovely in it.

The gals brought gifts to participate in a White Elephant exchange and I came home with a lovely tea set. I am an enormous fan of tea and I’ve always admired fancy china like my grandmother has in her home so this was the perfect gift for me.

I had a wonderful time despite the traffic I encountered on the way back home. The icing on the cake was the surprise on my husband’s face when he saw the look of the day. Though I normally don’t celebrate Valentine’s day, it was a great day and a perfect way to celebrate with a group of lovely ladies that share the same love for all things vintage.

Fashion at HHN

I started my vintage journey during the perfect season, Fall. Every year, my husband and I go to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando and this year, I got the chance to wear vintage all season. I started by making two skirts using Halloween fabrics I found at Joann Fabrics.

I love the selection they carry and usually I have at least one coupon worth 40% off. I made a pleated 2″ waisted skirt and a gathered, elastic waistband skirt.

The pleated skirt is my all time favorite. The combination of the fabric and the pleats just gives that vintage feel I wanted. I thought of doing it gathered but the price of the additional fabric would have put me out of budget. Instead, I used only 2 yards and still had at least a yard left for additional projects. The skirt even has POCKETS!!

I wore the gathered skirt more often just due to comfort. I love bats and the color allowed the print to glow in black lights which is a staple in many haunted house attractions. I loved it, however, in one of the scarezones (Vamp ’55) featuring 1950s vampires, the principal always seemed to take issue with my allegiance to the Bats.

The Vamp ’55 scarezone really was meant for me since I was just going into the vintage side of life. I even met a Spiffy Saturday friend there on multiple occasions wearing all the Pinup Girl Clothing pieces I could ever want.

My husband and I attended the event so often, the scareactors began to learn our names, and, on more than one occasion, compliment my attire. It became my happy place, especially since derby was no longer doing that for me. I had lost some friends but HHN helped me through that.

I even had the chance (pun intended) to re-wear my Chance skirt piece again. This time, I paired it with a Jaws t-shirt in honor of the fallen attraction. This HHN was probably my favorite HHN simply because I got to do it as myself and have the confidence to look the way I wanted to. And confidence can really get you anywhere.

The California Trip

What a surprise we got this year when my husband was told he was being sent to cover Halloween Horror Nights in Hollywood, California for HHN Unofficial! I was beyond excited since I’ve never traveled that far west before and I had always dreamed of going to Hollywood.

It was perfect timing for my vintage journey. It gave me the chance to purchase and pack up for the first time for an event. This meant I had to make sure I had the right outfits planned, the right shoes, the right accessories.snapchat-8960388577540576486

I bought my first items from Lindy Bop. A pair of Kendra trousers to wear at the parks and throughout the day in order to remain comfortable in the changing temperatures. Also, a Lindy Bop Thea tea dress for the last day so I could be free of leg prisons (aka pants).

We only spent 3 days there and we had a wonderful time. We walked and Ubered all around Los Angeles. We saw the Walk of Fame, Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, Grauman’s Chinese Theater, and of course, Universal Studios Hollywood.

I got alot of wear from the trousers and they are still my favorite comfy pants. I tend to wear alot of black and muted colors but with vintage, it always helps to have a little pop of color every once in a while.

Walking around Hollywood, I got alot of compliments on my hair (which was straight up until the heat hit) and my style in general. It was a great confidence boost. I didn’t visit mecca (PUG Boutique located in Burbank) because we were short on time due to my husband’s work, but there’s always next time! Read about our time at Universal Hollywood on HHN Unofficial here.
